This watch is very easy to use, The pathwinder has lived up to its hype to above and beyond. The negative its the band the end catches on things should of bought this with the metal band.
a great watch! recieved it on time & in good shape. the watch is easy to use & does all it says it can do.
Beautiful design. Bought it for my husband who had been looking at it for a little while. He was thrilled and even I love the style. I wish there was an equivalent design for women :). Would recommend to friends and family.

Casio Pathfinder 5000-1

I was intrigued by a new watch by Casio the Pathfinder 5000-1.
My disclaimer I used a Casio G-Shock Watch while stationed with the Army in Iraq. The watch held up to harsh conditions. My only concern was if the watch batteries die I will be without a watch. Casio has taken away that worry with what they call Tough Solar. You do not have to worry about batteries anymore.
Pathfinder 5000-1 has a analog face and along with a digital readout, It packs a lot of technology in a small package. Features such as timer, alarm, stop watch mode are standard on most watches but the Pathfinder 5000-1 has much more. It is a rugged but sharp looking watch which gets the time by Atomic Clock and has a daylight saving time override. The watch has a built in compass, attitude, and barometer. There are three buttons on the side that have those functions. I never get tired of holding the compass button down and watching the second hand point to North. The digital readout has an arrow and tell you the direction you are facing. The barometer is quite useful in seeing if the weather is going to change. The watch module is very fast and you can easily switch modes. The light button is a white light so you can see your watch face at night.
The Pathfinder 5000-1 is Casio is top of the line Pathfinder watch. It is a not a small watch but then again it is packed with a lot of features. This watch you can wear out to dinner or take out on combat mission. It is light and has a rubber watch band which will last the user a long time and is easy to clean.
It cost more than the other Pathfinder watches. But the old saying is you get watch you pay for holds true with this watch. The watch retails for $ 450.00 .

I bought this watch from Amazon a month ago. It's a very good watch. Pricey but a good investment. The watch came in thick Casio box and inside the box is the watch contained in a wooden "Pathfinder" box. Watch came with manual, tag, and a small card showing the PAW5000's features. The PAW5000 was wrapped in a thick plastic wrapper and sealed.
The PAW5000 came with it's time and date already adjusted to my area so there was no need to set it. The watch face is a bit big for my wrist but that is understandable as my arm is not that big anyway. PAW5000 has a compass, altimeter, and barometer. So far I've only used the barometer and altimeter. You need to have some technical know-how to understand how the altimeter and barometer works. There's some learning curve involved. Some owners say the altimeter is not accurate. Please remember this watch is not a dedicated altimeter device so you have to make some minor allowances when doing any readings. I think owners have this mindset that this watch will function the way dedicated devices work. If you have this mindset, then do not buy this watch. Buy an altimeter device or a barometer device instead. The PAW5000 watch gives you ballpark readings. I have no problem with this.
Some owners claim the manual is thick. The manual has three languages that's why it's thick. Obviously some owners did not even read the manual. The english section is the first section of the manual. Manual is clear and easy to read. Just follow the diagrams.
The wrist strap feels comfortable around my wrist. Sweetspot for wrist strap is the fifth or sixth hole from the watch face. Some owners say the strap catches wrist hairs on their arms which brings some discomfort. I don't have thick wrist hair so I cannot verify this.
Weight of the watch is a bit on the heavy side, almost like a Seiko Divers watch but on a lighter side. Thickness is surprisingly thin compared to G-shock watches. There are metal parts on this watch. The watch case is 80% metal and 20% plastic. The ring surrounding the watch face is metal. The watch boasts TOUGH MOVEMENT which means the watch will adjust itself should it sustain any impact. Remember though this is not a G-Shock watch so do not abuse this watch.
The backplate of the watch is stamped JAPAN to indicate this watch was made in Japan. The wriststrap buckle will also say CASIO JAPAN, further verifying this watch was made in Japan. There are two serial numbers on the backplate, one on the 12 o clock position and one on the 6 o clock position. Not sure why there are two serial numbers. Logo of Pathfinder is on the backplate. Also, the watch machine model number is stamped on the backplate.
The PAW5000 is TOUGH SOLAR which means the watch is solar powered and it has perpetual day and date up to 2099. I will already be dead by then and the watch will continue to work. Make it a habit not to store the watch where there is no light, if you are not using it. Solar watches do die out also. My dad (avid watch collector) told me many many moons ago when he was still around, to always feed your solar watches with light even when not in use. It helps keep the battery alive. There's probably no scientific proof to back-up his claim but being my dad, I believe what he said since he based it on years of experience.
Overall, after a month of hiking, the watch is working correctly and without issues. It's already suffered two scruff marks which I am not bothered by. THis is an adventure watch anyway. Can you use it at formal dinner parties? Sure you can. If people nowadays come to formal dinner parties wearing suits and low-cut Chuck Taylors and get away with it, there's no reason why you can't wear this watch during formal occasions.

Classy geek status

My gf told me I should find a 1 thousand dollar watch as a symbol to show my class and status.
Well, I am a geek and this watch fits the bill very nicely at less than half the budget.
A Tag Heu** was what my gf wanted me to get; but to show my class and status, I had other criteria in mind. Because I travel a lot in addition to hiking and working out, I wanted a watch with gps functionality and a heart rate monitor. No such device exists that I know of. Casio's Pathfinder series with the standard ABC functions however piqued my interests. What really geeked me out about this watch is that it's pretty much self-sufficient. It is almost always accurate (self correcting tough movement and 6 channel atomic clock radio) and never needs rewinding (solar powered). Ok, it's not the only watch in existance that calibrates itself to the nearest atomic clock, but how many of those watches can tell you the elevation you're at, the temperature, barometric pressure, or where north lies? Granted even when I'm hiking I don't need all that information, but it is cool to have. What makes the difference between this and other pathfinder watches, is that this is the only one with analogue hands. Except for the redundant text all over the face of this thing, it has enough class that even my gf approves of my wearing this at dressed up occasions.

The Casio Story
With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.
In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week.
